Egypt's minister of telecommunications is said to have
announced the roll out of internet connected busses on our
streets, starting next year.
There is a rumour on the internet that has us
purchasing a new car. Apparently the Egyptian
government is planning on providing Wifi internet
connectivity to 500 public busses in 2014. According
to Atef Helmi, Minister of Telecommunications,
Egypt is in the process of negotiating with Alcatel
and other telecom companies to equip their fleet.
Helmi also claims that the busses will be running on
natural gas and will not be charging extra for the
optional internet access. If this is all turns out to be
true, then this will surely increase the use of public
transport and, hopefully, decreasing traffic – a small step in the right direction for Egypt and its
environment.
